Kitulgala City
Kitulgala is a picturesque town in Sri Lanka, renowned for its lush greenery and adventure activities. Nestled amidst the verdant hills, it is famous for white-water rafting on the Kelani River, where scenes from the film “The Bridge on the River Kwai” were shot.
Kitulgala lies in Kegalle District, roughly 90 km from Colombo — one of Sri Lanka’s premier adventure destinations.
Makandawa Rain Forest
The Makandawa Forest Reserve is one of Sri Lanka's richest and most unspoiled rainforests. It covers an area of 1,155 hectares and lies close to the village of Kithulgala, one of Sri Lanka's centers for adventure sports. The reserve hosts a plethora of rare and endemic flora and fauna. It also hides one of Sri Lanka's well known ancient treasures: the Belilena Cave. Makandawa is also the selfsame rainforest where the famous World War II movie, "The Bridge over the River Kwai", was filmed.
The Forest
This secondary lowland rainforest has several interesting geographical features, such as crystal clear natural rock pools, waterfalls, and wonderfully challenging trails that meander through the thick tropical rainforest.
With the Kelani River running right through the jungle, Kithulgala is a great place for hiking, whitewater rafting, birdwatching, butterfly watching, and various adventure sports.
Flora and Fauna in Kithulgala

Rare Fish: Asoka Barb, Black Ruby Barb, Black-lined Barb, and the Stone Sucker.
Bird Species: 54 rare species including the endemic Sri Lanka Orange-billed Babbler, Green-billed Coucal, Chestnut-backed Owlet, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Ceylon Jungle & Spurfowl, Layard’s Parakeet, Ceylon Lorikeet, Common Hill Myna, Black-rumped Flameback, Sri Lanka Crested Drongo, Ceylon Grey Hornbill, and Brown-capped Babbler.
Other Wildlife: Endemic butterflies, dragonflies, reptiles, the Grizzled Giant Squirrel, and the rare Red Slender Loris.
Weather & River Crossing
The Makandawa Forest receives rainfall mainly during the two monsoon seasons. During these periods, the Kelani River runs wild and wide, making a traditional dugout canoe with an outrigger necessary for locals to cross safely.
Belilena Caves
The Belilena Caves were the habitation of the Balangoda Man; an ancient species of men who were discovered to have lived many thousands of years before the calculated beginnings of mankind. They lived for a period between 32,000 and 9,000 years ago and used advanced techniques and tools to hunt and survive. The skeletal remains found here in excavations, were dated to be from 16,000 years ago and are some of the oldest in the world.
